Kathy’s Blog – March
A major concern among pet owners lately is the dangers of Xylitol. Many media outlets have published high-quality articles about Xylitol in recent weeks, but I would like to inform you further and hopefully answer any questions you may have.
Xylitol is a sweet crystalline alcohol and is used as an artificial sweetener in certain chewing gums, candies, and baked goods. It is also used in many oral health products. While completely harmless to humans, it is absolutely deadly if consumed by dogs.
Because Xylitol mimics sugar, it causes an insulin response in dogs when ingested. Blood sugar suddenly drops dramatically and the dog becomes hypoglycemic. Such a rapid onset of hypoglycemia leads to seizures, coma, and death, sometimes even within 30 minutes of ingestion. If you suspect your dog of ingesting a product containing Xylitol, look for symptoms such as lethargy and difficulty walking. If these symptoms are present and worsening, it is extremely imperative you contact a veterinarian or animal poison control specialist immediately so proper care may be administered.
To prevent Xylitol poisoning, all you need to do is be aware. Products containing Xylitol should have it listed in the list of ingredients. Place Xylitol-containing products in safe, secure areas that can’t be accessed by your dogs.
